would i be able to buy a graphics card and bring it to the apple store and pay the guys to change it? i mean they fix apple computers all the time right?
The GPU is soldered onto the logic board, thus the whole logic board needs to be replaced, and as there are no faster GPUs coming with that logic board, there is no way to get that Mac of yours faster at playing games. You will be better off spending 500 € (the cost of a logic board replacement) on a low gaming PC.

What are the possible upgrades I can do both programwise and hardware wise for my 2008 macbook pro?

my info is:

10.6.8
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

What are things I can buy to improve my performance for Diablo 3? Im playing on all low settings and there is still a bit of lag and my laptop gets extremely hot. I already have SMC fan installed and running but it doesnt do anything. Do I need to buy memory or ram or both to improve my performance? Will the performance increase be noticeable or will it not do anything due to the graphics card?

Im sure there will be some difference right? If memory or ram works, which ones do you recommend? Thanks.

Max out the ram, install an SSD drive, install Windows 7. If they haven't been mentioned already? And then when your ready to upgrade to a new machine, use the Windows and SSD drive in the new machine :)

ok so right now im pretty much get 1-5 fps when i play, 400+ latency, temperature at 80+ celsius

blizzard said my graphics card is the minimum requirements, obviously given my above numbers it is not playable thus does not meet minimum requirements, so there must be something else wrong with my laptop? i did a repair disk fix earlier, im at 10.6.8, i have 3 gigs of ram.

Any chance someone with my same graphics card/similar specs that play diablo 3 give some insight on their gameplay?

1. Latency is based on your internet connection speed.
2. There is nothing you can do about the FPS. You have a 4 year old computer that wasn't even new technology when it was released 4 years ago. Minimum requirements are just that, minimum. Basically, if the game will run on a computer, it's considered meeting the minimum specs.

If you're not running under Windows, try using bootcamp and Windows 7. You will see a slight increase. Otherwise, you're out of luck. You're expecting too much from a 4 year old Mac.

you will NOT be able to play diablo 3 on that machine. 9400m was an extremely weak gpu even when it came out 4 years ago. no ram is going to help you and there are no other ways to upgrade that would actually improve performance.

i have a 2008 aluminum macbook non-pro with pretty much the same specs (although my ram is better than yours somehow. ddr3) and i also play diablo 3. its only sort of playable when you're actually in a cave/dungeon. when you're outside its unbearable.

luckily i have a hackintosh thats an i5 2500k with a gtx 460 card. plays diablo 3 at 1080p resolution all settings maxed wonderfully.

OP has the 8600M GT dedicated graphics processor, not the 9400M integrated graphics processor.

Ok OP, you got lucky, I have the exact same MBP, with the 8600gt, (although I have 4 gigs of RAM) and after being a long time lurker I decided to sign up to tell you about gaming with my MBP.

First of all, make sure you've got Windows 7 installed via bootcamp because games will just run faster on that side.

I have played through the open BWE Diablo III had a few weekends ago, and the game runs okay, not ideal, but I'd say on medium to low with decent FPS.

If it is of interest of you, I also played the GW2 BWE and the game ran a little less than ideal but still playable on low.

Other games I have had installed on here have been Dragon Age (first one), and everything from Valve (HL Series, Portal Series, TF, CS) all of which work pretty well.

In all honesty she's not the fastest ship, as a matter of fact I will be upgrading mine to a current model MBP or the new one if Apple if it comes out soon. That being said she still has a lot of game in her, and a lot of games these days will still run alright, which is why I will be passing her on to my girlfriend, who is slowly learning to get her game on.

If I had to suggest any upgrades, upgrade your 2 gigs to 4 gigs of ram, maybe throw in a solid state drive if you have money to throw around, and make sure your drivers are all up to date on the windows side. Also tinker with the video settings in the game and see what works, I usually have no idea what I am doing but I seem to find a decent setting after a little trial and error.

Hope it helps!

Good lord! A 8600m GT should be able to get more than 1-5fps, especially at very low resolution.

Here it says that the card can handle Crysis at low with 46fps. Well enough to play.

But it might be that the card is crippled. Apple makes modifications on the hardware.

Did you try different drivers? Under windows?

Hmm I was reading around and read about driver updates, but not sure which one. Read something about a 260 driver for my graphics card but it was for windows only. Any chance anyone knows of a mac driver upgrade for the graphics card that may help? Thanks.

OP, just to check, go to system profiler, click on Graphics/Displays, and check the PCI Lane Width. If it doesn't say x16, you have hardware problems.

If you're on Lion, you go to the Apple Menu, About This Mac, More Info, and then System Report. Then click on Graphics/Displays on the side.

I had a problem with my old MBP where the GPU was being limited to only using a single PCI lane. It destroyed performance in games, but worked perfectly otherwise. It was a faulty chip.
