Ok. So a friend of mine has been using crazy amounts of data. And honestly it seems to have started since she updated to iOS 10. I've looked into when it happens and it's late middle of the night while she's sleeping. 4 AM ish. And then it seems to also show some data at the same time in the afternoon. But it's the late ones that are high. Does anyone know what could be causing this?? Especially since she's on WiFi when she's sleeping - she's home! Why would any phone use any data if wifi is on?? I looked at mine too because I was curious and sure enough mine also uses very little overnight. But I'm literally 20 or less feet from my wireless router. I don't get it. If anyone has an ideas as to what may be causing this, I'd love to know how to stop it. Besides the obvious - having to turn off data every night. Pain in the butt if you ask me. Advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You should be able to see what might be using cellular data in Settings > Cellular.

That shows which apps are permitted to use it. But it doesn't tell me when they are using it. My main question though is why would any data be used when wifi is on?

It also shows how much data they are using (and you can reset that too), which can help track things down. That said, with WiFi it shouldn't be using cellular data. At the same time, once the phone is locked and asleep it does drop the WiFi connection, but should pick it up again if for some reason it needs to do something that involves data.

where are you checking to see when the data is being used? from your carrier's account?
It's possible that that's when the usage info is updated on the servers, not necessarily that it's being used at that time.

I think this might be what's happening... it's just all showing up at that time. But I think the real problems are either her kids using it and turning off wifi. Or the wifi router isn't working great anymore. She's got some ideas now. Thanks for all your responses!

You should check and see if Wifi Assist is on and using data. It's usage can be checked on the same page as other cellular data, it's located right above the reset button on the bottom. With this on, even if you're connected to wifi it can use the cellular connection for data if the wifi stream isn't strong enough.

Thank you. That was the first thing I had her check. That was a setting I turned off when iOS 9 was first out.
