All iMacs use notebook cards. The 8800 is the faster card in practice.

Than I have to appologize to kgeier82 for my remark :) So you think the 8800GS is more powerful than the GT130 ?

Absolutely. Look up them on notebookcheck (the 8800GS is actually an 8800m GTS). The GT120/130 cards are a disappointment, IMO. In almost every game, the 8800 beats out the GT130, sometimes by a wide margin.

But the 2008 Imac's 24"/3.06 GHz had the 8800GS wheres the later ones (late 2009) have the GT130. It seems odd to me that in time the iMac was downgraded !!!

Welcome to the world of Apple and the upside down logic it applies sometimes. Notice that the GT120/130 did not last very long as options. Maybe Apple was promised more by nVidia than could be delivered.

According to the www.nvidia.com/page/geforce8.html site the 8800GS (there are even 2 version) and the 8800GTS are different graphic cards. I am lost now.

Niklaas, sorry, I understand this subject is beat to dead for you but I am new to MAC's. So what brand is the GT130 if it is not a NVIDIA, very confusing to name it the same. The url's you sent me too are to difficult to understand for me. So can you explain for a newby what the difference is in speed. I will be doing FCS, AE, Motion and PS and using AVCI as codec. Which do you think suits best for these applications??

edit : accoording to the nvidia site the GT130 exists !! : » NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M

    600 MHz, 32 - unified, DX10 | 1066 MHz, 128 Bit

Okay..... So you know now that Apple uses MXM cards ( smaller versions of desktop cards ) in there Imacs. These cards are a little bit slower than there desktop versions.
Apple thinks " he, let´s calculate this difference for our customers and rename the cards with relevant desktop card names witch should be as fast as our mobility cards! "

This is in my eyes very inaccurate and leads to much confusion at the users.

So your Geforce GT 130 .... is in fact a Mobile Geforce 8800GTS or 9800GTS ( i´am not sure witch one of these , but they use the same chip, so never mind )
What means that in speed ? hell! ... i sent you the link !!!
Your Geforce GT130 ( in fact a Mobile Geforce 9800M GTS ) is a very fast Mobile card ! its almost identical with the Card used in the Imac that says Geforce 8800GS ( in fact Mobile Geforce 8800GTS) and its even a bit faster ...........................!!!! .

I don't understand why everbody reacts so irritated. I have to choose between 2 used 24" imacs. The only difference is the graphics card. So I was only wondering which would be the best option.

yes so go ant get this ati card its the better one

and the amount of ram a card has is not comparable with another card just like that

its like if i would compare my iMac g3 with a iMac g5 and say they are equally fast as they have the same amount of ram , you will find 256 mb cards that leave other 512 mb cards behind in processing power
and ALL depends what you want to use your iMac for
    sometimes is less more
