I have.

OWC 8GB = £400 + tax
Crucial 8GB = £620

How is 16GB from OWC cheaper than 8GB from Crucial?

Still :confused:

Just to stick my oar in, I think the confusion may be with 2GB modules - here 8GB (4x2) from OWC is $430 which seems to come to about £300 with tax and shipping which is then £600 for 16GB while Crucial is £305x2 = £610 for 8GB.
The numbers are a bit different for the 4GB modules.

Yes, that is it.

16GB = 2GB x 8 for $839/£420. Add shipping, add VAT and it's still less than Crucial.

I have ordered from OWC when I lived in the UK and yes I was charged Import Taxes, however since living in Spain I never have to pay it. I thinks its because the Spanish are so laid back they they cannot be bothered to collect it.

On this note, does anybody know if a UK retailer stocks these miniStackv3 enclosures? I have an iomega MiniMax at present and would like to get a second drive that can be stacked above it, but the miniStacks from OWC have FireWire 800. As I have both an Alu iMac and a new MBP coming it the faster connection would be useful.

I know that forums are where people go who are having problems, and so the number of people here claiming to have faulty RAM from OWC is likely not in proportion to actual fault rates, but doesn't there still seem to be a surprisingly large number of people with RAM failures from OWC?

I've only read one report from someone who has had faulty Apple RAM (and while some have removed the original Apple RAM, many have added to it).

I assumed that all RAM was tested before being allowed to leave the factory, so it would seem a little odd that this many RAM modules are becoming faulty after leaving the factory?

If they're properly protected in transit, and customers take proper precautions against static, would you expect a very low failure rate from passing factor tests to being installed by the end user? If these modules are tested ok at the factory, and then are faulty a few weeks/months later when installed, what hope is there of them working properly for the life of the computer?

I'd be interested in other people's comments - it just seems that lots of people are accepting the fact that their RAM is faulty and the replacement works fine - but are you confident that the replacement will remain fine?

i bought from owc 4 months ago
i bought
4x2GB, That is 8GB in total for my iMac and MBP
their ram is good. I think the price was 190 pounds (i think this was with the shipping which costed $26, 13 pounds)
the charges (vat whatever) were 45 pounds.
Fedex sent me an invoice for the tax.

called them to pay.

i think crucial has comparable price, and i will advice you to buy it from crucail.

ordered the 4 x 2G from owc - their web site listed the costs as;

$439 ram
$27.53 shipping
$2 insurance

Fedex sent me an invoice a week after delivery and show;

$439 ram
£40 GBP freight - over double what the actual freight was
£7.19 GBP VAT Value adjustment - whatever that is!

they added all 3 of those together and calculated vat of £47.66 from there.

finally they add £6.80 for admin.

using the owc figures then I think the vat should be around £42 + £6.80 admin

i've queried it with them still waiting for a proper response

I have had the same problem as rtrt regarding excessive UK duty/tax charges. This is because OWC do not put the shipping costs on their paperwork to FEDEX and if you challenge OWC they simply don't want to know. I am sure there are many others who have also been overcharged, but don't realize it unless they carefully read the breakdown from FEDEX.

If anyone else has had the same problem there is a form (C 285) that can be downloaded from http://www.hmrc.gov.uk to reclaim overcharges for duty and tax.

Ordered 8Gb from OWC.

Parcelforce were the carriers. Got hit £55 (inc the outrageous 'admin' charges). Much cheaper than anywhere else.

I ordered 4 x 1GB from OWC. Fedex wasn't an option when I ordered for some reason. I chose USPS rather than UPS, and it took about 7 days, and was delivered by Parcel Force. I didn't have to pay tax, thankfully, so it was worth the slightly longer wait.

Well mine arrived about a week and a half after i ordered it. Still havent had to pay any taxes (it arrived about 3 weeks ago). Really well packed too. Mac pro's arriving in a few days, so haven't tested them yet.

To the last two persons who posted! Have you still not been charged for taxes and admin? Also did you both use USPS?

Thanks
