I'm bumping this thread because I just discovered that my mid-2007 SR MBP has a PCIe-lane width of only 8x (instead of 16x).

Has it ever been established that this is an actual glitch? Does anyone know a fix? And, most importantly, do you guys think this is the first sign of the 8600GT failing?

i have exact problem, just came up today. i have serious fps failures in call of duty black ops, in yesterday, i was able to play this game mid details at 1440x900 with about 23-24fps. but today, i cant even see 10s. when i checked system profiler in mac os x and gpuz at w7, i saw i have this kinda problem.

i have late 2008, i havent got any guarantee, and i need a solution asap. jesus, hate this computer.

--http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 i found this link. im gonna take my mbp to the authorised reseller tomorrow. i hope theyll accept it.

I have a new question!!!! It's about my screen dimmer...

When I hold down F1 to dim the screen to black sometimes the screen brightens back up on its own and if I'm in bed that gets pretty annoying. Why does the screen brighten? The ambient light sensor is off and I cannot find any other reason why it brightens up..... Puleeese Help!

Oh yeah, I'm new to the forums everyone... HEY!

It's possible that they will only consider fixing it if you have the following symptoms:

<<What to look for:

Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on. >>

I'm just saying, be prepared for them to say that frame rate is not an indication ( I know that wouldn't be fair, etc....). So, tell them you're having the above symptoms as well. CYA.

Also, you have 4 years to deal with it, not 3.

If they do open it up somewhere, have them clean out the dust bunnies from the fans and heat sink fins. : )

interesting!

my 17" 2011 pci-e lane width is only 8 also
ill call apple tomorrow and find out why this is!

In the mean time, any1 have any ideas? Any1 else with 2011 MBP has x8 pci-e lane width instead of 16?

No need to call Apple. Your 2011 MBP is supposed to have only 8 lanes dedicated to the gpu. Four of the other 8 are taken by the thunderbolt port.

it is running at 8x because the other half is reserved for use by thunderbolt. what? you think that 10gbps of throughput can come out of nowhere? thunderbolt is an extension of pcie.
EDIT: NVM. i just realized why all the results were for 8600m gts.

guys i also have macbook pro early 2011 and ıt has 8x speed too. but i know, other 8x going to thunderbolt.

this old machine is macbook pro 15inch with 8600m gt 256mb. there is something odd with it.

well, if i restart the computer, pci line width became 1x. if i shut down and open it up again(it's not related to time between closing and opening it up) it became 8x. well when it's 8x, theoretically there is no difference with 16x. but 1x is completely annoying.

well, you guys can say "then shut it down, instead of restarting it". well, i am, already. but it's going to became a serious problem, i know that.

btw, i'm living in turkey, there is no apple store in here, so i gone authorized service. they say "fps is not an indication" like 8corewhore said before.
