Question for AT&T contract reversion if you return iPhone 4

So I had a 3GS from release day, and was able to upgrade to an iPhone 4. If I returned the iPhone 4 would I get out of contract completely with AT&T or would it be returned to the status that my 3GS was on (ie. I was one year into the 2 year commitment), or does it stay on it's now re-upped 2 year commitment, or what?

If possible, please only answer if you have personal knowledge of what happens, and not just what you would guess happens.
