I'm getting an iPod Touch for Christmas, and I need to know what kind can currently be jailbroken.

I know the 1st gen can be jailbroken, but what OFW does it need to be? Can it be downgraded?

Can the 2nd gen be jailbroken yet? What OFW does it need to be? Can it be downgraded?

Please give me details, because I'm trying to find out which one I need. Thanks :D

P.S. How can I download apps for free?

All of them can be jailbroken with blackra1n.
I don't know about downgrading.
iPod Touch 3G's will be tethered (meaning if you turn it off, you need to rerun blackra1n for it to boot.)

Is blackra1n ran from the PC, or iPod.

Also, how can I download apps for free?

Blackra1n runs from PC. You need firmware 3.1.2 to use blackra1n. There are other jailbreak solutions for earlier firmware, but it's so hard to remember which one works with which firmware, it's simplest to go with blackra1n on 3.1.2.

As for downgrading, 1st and 2nd generation ipod touches can be downgraded anytime to any firmware you want. 3rd gen can't downgrade once you upgrade.

There are a lot of free apps in the official app store. If you mean how to get paid apps for free, discussion of that topic is not allowed in this forum.
