Question: New Macbook Pros:

Hi all:

I want to upgrade soon from my 2012 MBP w/ CD drive to the the new 13" MBP's, but i remember reading various responses on threads that a new batch of macs that will be better will be releasing soon.

Can anyone tell me when that is?
Is it worth waiting for?
Are the 2020's 13 MBP's problematic?

Nobody knows for certain when new devices come out, only Apple does.

However it is likely that an update will come some time this fall/winter.

A rumor has it that 13" will be replaced by 14", indicated by 15" getting replaced by 16" last year.

2020 13" are great but if you do not need a new laptop right now I would personally wait a few more months.

Even if you do not want 14" or the updated 13" (how-ever the new update turns out), the current models will become cheaper.

They will still be Intel chips however if Apple silicon is what you are waiting for, which is highly unlikely to happen until at least next year.

I know this isn't your question, but a simple upgrade to your computer and you with think you have a new one. Replace your hard drive with a solid state drive and you will have a much faster machine that should give you a couple more years. Mojave works great on the 2012 also. It is a pretty simple process. Just a thought. And it will give Apple time to settle in to their ARM processor. I plan to keep my 2012 going for at least a couple more years.

I would definitely wait with a new MBP purchase until October/November. There is a good chance that the 13" model will be updated either with new Intel Tiger Lake chips or that a new Apple Silicon 13" model is released.

This fall, MacBook Pro 13 and MacBook Air 13 - same form factor with apple silicon instead of Intel's CPUs. Plus, maybe new/old 12-inch MacBook on ARM.

I would wait as everyone else is saying, but if you need instant performance. Maybe try upgrading to a cheap SSD or ram.

If you need the ability to run Windows or virtualize either the x86 (Intel) versions of Windows, Linux, or macOS, then I'd get the current models (I'd go with the 4-port version as that is at least based on current Intel technology). Otherwise, we're on the verge of another processor architecture transition and the machines rumored to more immediately replace the current 13" MacBook Pros will be based on Apple's own SoCs and not on Intel. If that's not likely to be an issue for you (and you're cool ditching Boot Camp and x86 OS virtualization), then I'd wait until later this year when the first batch of Apple SoC based Macs come out as they'll surely be faster and supported for longer.

You seriously think Tiger Lake is making its way to a 13" MacBook Pro? I'd say that an Apple Silicon replacement is FAR more likely.

I wouldn’t discount any possibility at this point. Apple Mac chips are still a big enigma. It is entirely possible that first Apple Silicon Macs will reuse higher binned mobile chips - will still outperform the Air and the 12” - until the yields are stabilized fir more complex chips.

They'd easily outperform the Intel 13" Pros too. That's a low bar. Again, the 13" MacBook Pros are now Apple's second (and third) slowest Mac models.
