Will it be straightforward to activate a sim-free iPhone XS for us on AT&T? Do I just transfer the sim card from my current iPhone and put it in the XS? Is there any disadvantage to using my old (AT&T iPhone 6S) sim card, rather than using a new one that (I think) would come with the XS if I had bought it specifically for AT&T?

If you bought an unlocked SIM free iPhone all you need to do is put your SIM card in your new iPhone. You do not need to do anything else to activate it.
An unlocked iPhone does not come with a SIM card.

Thanks. I’m in the same situation. First time I preordered a sim-free iPhone (XS Max 256). I’m on AT&T as well. My 7plus is long paid off but not sure if it’s unlocked. Should I request an unlock now or wait to my Max to be delivered?

Unlock now through att website. Takes a couple of days to authorize it if I remember correctly. Do a search it’s easy. Unlocked iPhone will get you more money if you decide to sell it.

Thanks. Will do. Thinking about going over to xfinity mobile. My current AT&T phone won’t work (xfinity used Verizon) but the sim-free should work with any carrier down the line, right?

Bought my iPhone 7 from Verizon and switched to att year later no problem phone worked. If you unlock your 7 should work on any carrier.

The xfinity site (the last time I checked) said AT@T phones weren’t available for byod.

iPhone 6 supported both gsm and cdma iPhone 7 doesn’t support it going from gsm to cdma just checked online.

Possibly dumb question: I just got the confirmation email to unlock my phone. Email says to backup my phone, erase my phone then restore. Do I do this now and then pop in old sim on my Max on Friday? Or something else? Thanks.

Started using intel radio iPhone 7 which couldn’t support gsm to cdma but no problem cdma to gsm. Most iPhone 6 used Qualcomm radio worked both ways
[doublepost=1537159634][/doublepost]Yea do it now on your computer backup erase restore will say congrats phone is unlocked and everything will be restored same way before you started. Unlock doesn’t affect the sim
[doublepost=1537159726][/doublepost]When New iPhone comes in put sim in from old phone before turning it on. You’ll have 2 unlocked phones

I also got those same instructions after requesting a unlock with my iP7+ with Bell, I am also wondering if I'm time restricted or can erase it at anytime in the future when we get our new phones.

Thanks so much. Will do tomorrow. Getting too late to do it tonight.

Good question don’t know but I would do it before new phone comes in. Takes couple of minutes and phone is restored same way before you stared just unlocked.

Just saw your edit in your post above, Thanks I'll backup to my computer and wipe/restore right now.

If I'm going to take my AT&T sim card from my current locked iPhone 6S and transfer it to my unlocked iPhone XS, do I have to unlock my current iPhone 6S first, as someone suggested above? What if I don't care if my 6S stays locked after I take the sim card out?

Just FYI your old SIM will not work with the new phone. The new sim card slot is smaller so you will need to get a new sim
