I had a quick question that I'd love some understanding of. I love using Apple TV and airplay, but the one thing I kind of prefer the chromecast for is not having to download content before I play it (for instance, if I buy something from google play I can typically stream it to the chromecast without downloading it).

I bought a movie from the iTunes store today on my iPhone, and wanted to airplay it to my TV using Apple TV. I had to download the movie prior to being able to airplay it. Obviously I know I could just buy the movie on Apple TV, but is there a way not to have to download it on my iPhone before airplaying it?

You don't need to buy from Apple TV. You can just buy from iPhone, stop the download, go to Apple TV/Movies/Purchased and watch your purchases there. No AirPlay needed.
Better yet, Your purchase should appear at the top area on the Home page automatically when you select Movies, so you don't even have to dig into it.
