question on apps that has ipad/iphone version

There are some apps that seems to be "dual" purpose. like it can be used on both iphone and ipad. And there are apps thats iphone only or ipad only.

I guess my question is with dual apps.

I wanna backup my apps from both my ipad and iphone to my lappy. Some apps are common to both (for example metroview which appears on the ipad/ipodtouch/iphone section of the apps on itunes).

I just "transferred my purchase" on my iphone. If i did the same to my ipad, would it be overwriting the iphone backup with an ipa thats incompatible with iphone version?

i hope my question is clear. tyvm ^.^
