question regarding where to store a mini

I picked up a mini and i was curious about where i can store it. i have a desk and this hutch:

can i store it in the little cubbie area in the middle of that hutch?

As long as you have sufficient air flow around the mini (say 1 inch at least), it shouldn't be a problem.

Just don't block the back vent and you'll be fine.
Storing it in some places - for example putting something directly on top of it - may affect the wireless reception however.
