I have so many movies that I keep on an external HD because I dont want them taking up space on my main HD. Since Apple TV wont have accesses to my external hard drive could I use a app (like airvideo, plex, zumocast) to stream from my Mac to my idevice to my Apple TV?

    Hope this makes sense.

Yes, I know for a fact that Zumocast will be able to do this. That said, what does the fact that your drive is external have to do with it? No reason iTunes can't access content there. Zumocast is a good choice if you don't want to permanently convert your video, but otherwise you may as well just add it to your library.

How do you know this "for a fact?" We know that it is possible for a real-time video transcoder running on a Mac/PC to send an H.264 stream to an app running on an iOS device, but we don't know whether that app will be fully compatible with AirPlay. It may be compatible or it might not. I don't think anyone can claim that it will work "for a fact" until it has been demonstrated using the as yet unreleased Apple TV software update. AirPlay will be somewhat "automagical," but there is no guarantee that it will work with everything.

Well, it currently has the option of doing so, and it will already send the audio portion of a video - we are just waiting for the update so it will do the whole thing. Everything points to the fact that any content that uses the built-in audio and video player will be Airplay 'enabled' by default.
