I am new to mobile me and have a few questions about idisk.

When I open idisk on my mac I have a number of folders, however there are 5 I am confused about, they are;

Backup
Library
Software
Web
Groups

They look like shortcuts to other folders and when I try to open them it asks me for my webdav name and password which I don't know. What are these folders used for?

Also, am I right in saying anything I put in my public folder is what I can use to send people links from. Say I want to share a document, I put it in my public folder and send the link to someone else? I trust nobody can access any of my other folders unless they login into mobileme with my user name and password?

Also if I start an account then do not renew it, then renew it later is all my data still there? I assume I cannot use my .me email address once the trial has expired?

Also, if I put pictures into my gallery does that use up part of my 20GB allowance? Does the 20GB cover everything, email, calendar, contacts, idisk etc?

Lastly, what is back to my mac?

Sorry for all the newbie questions but if anyone can answer these I would be very grateful!

Most of them keep program settings, mail info and dashboard settings, so if you sign in on another mac you don't have to configure everything. I assume Web is for your public website. I don't know what Groups is supposed to do.

Also, am I right in saying anything I put in my public folder is what I can use to send people links from. That's why you can set a different password for your public folder in preferences. So your private data should be safe.

Also if I start an account then do not renew it, then renew it later is all my data still there? I assume I cannot use my .me email address once the trial has expired?

The data is lost. But on the bright side you can create an account with the .me name you had before (worked for me - I had a .mac trial a year ago).

Also, if I put pictures into my gallery does that use up part of my 20GB allowance? Does the 20GB cover everything, email, calendar, contacts, idisk etc?

Everything (including mail) is part of the 20GB. By default it assigns half of it to mail, so you only have 10GB for iDisk. You can change those settings in the preferences on the .me website.

Lastly, what is back to my mac?

Haven't tried it yet. It should allow you to use screen sharing over the internet (much like iChat). Also has some other features I haven't looked into yet.

i noticed that the idisk feature "share files..." that was shown in the wwdc'08 keynote is still missing. is this just missing in the german version of mobileme or in general?

also the web access to the idisk public folder is exactly the same as it were in .mac which means that you can see the files in your public folder using the iphone or ipod touch, but you can not open them.
the direct link to your public folder is: http://public.me.com/username
for those of you who set a password, you have to login after visiting that url with username "public" and the password you have set.

i'm very unhappy with mobileme right now, because the web interface is working pretty slow here in germany. they set up some new servers in europe for mobileme but most of the routing to me.com is still done over the US (especially web.me.com for your homepage). i also lost my whole calendar on all my devices thanks to the latest maintenance, but at least i can receive my emails again.

If you open your iDisk...
The top item should be - "About your iDisk" text document.
This will explain all of your folders. Some, you don't want to touch...
