Bought a new Canon SD based Camcorder today upgrading from my 11 year old Mini DV Camcorder that used FireWire. When I connect the camcorder to my Mac using USB is there a way to play the video clips on the SD card rather than just importing them to the Mac? Thankfully my Mac has a SD Card slot so I can always eject the card and play the clips that way without importing them to my Mac, but it may be easier to use USB. Is there a way, or do they have to be imported to the mac to play them?

Without knowing the specific model of either the camera or your Mac, there is a strong possibility that the SD card in the slot will work better (faster) than a USB cable.
But when the "import" menu comes up you can just put the cursor on the clip and tap the spacebar. That should play it.

[edit]. In my iMovie 10.1.9, which I believe is the latest, I open iMovie and stick in an SD card from my Sony a6000. The import menu comes up, and I can select and tap the space bar to play. ymmv!
