Questions about Radeon 6490M

    Because the amount of VRAM is not the only thing that counts. For example, 6490M uses GDDR5 while 6470M uses DDR3. GDDR5 is a lot faster. Also, since neither of the GPUs is a speed monster and have only 64-bit memory lane, they don't have great memory bandwidth, thus more VRAM wouldn't even be useful because the GPU is too slow to use it.

    6470M uses DDR3...

    Apple does not even use AMD 6470M. OP was asking why 6490M with 256MB of GDDR5 is faster than 6470M with 1GB of DDR3.

    Yes, you probably could play most games that require more memory but the performance could suffer.
