Hi guys. So I have an iPhone 3GS jailbroken to IOS 6 using evasion, with baseband 05.16.05, serial number: xx937xxxxxx.

But I'm a little confused about unlocking it. Basically I will send this phone to Dominican Republic, to a very deserving young girl graduating with honors, bit I don't know if I need to unlock it at all...

If I do, I wouldn't know where to start. I see upgrade methods to other basebands and downgrade methods that seemed to not apply to my case (not sure).

I see manual methonds (SAM Unlock) that seem to no longer work.

And I also see ebay unlockers that seem to do it by only using your IMEI number, and seem to be very successful, but I wouldn't know how they do it.

    Any help on my case?

You can install iPad baseband, then downgrade the baseband to 5.13.xx which Ultrasn0w will unlock.
    iClarified.com has a tutorial.

But IMEI unlock is the best.

Thank you, but this worries me:

If I do what you tell me, I guess I would brick my device?

If that's the case then don't do it. Look for an IMEI unlock.

I am only double making sure since I am noob-ish, but there are even more noob-ish people that may have gone blindly at it, and brick their devices.

It also states that serial numbers xx134 and above would brick their devices, and I stated that my device is xx937, so I got confused since he's implying I should do it.

I'm not trying to be picky, or diminish anyone's advise here, I highly appreciate them. I just need to be sure.

Based on the serial number you provided, your phone was manufactured during the 37th week of 2009.

That is well before Apple started using Toshiba chips in it's factories - which actually began in some factories in the 28th week of 2011

And I would have never advised you that you could flash the iPad baseband to your phone if it would have ruined your phone !

If its locked to AT&T pay the $2-3 and get a permanent imei unlock.

Thank you! I didn't know that. Could you please point me into the right tutorial to upgrade to the iPAd Baseband, and downgrade? I swear I looked everywhere, but am having some trouble finding tutorials, even on iClarified.

PS: I wish to do an IMEI unlock as a last resort, because I simply wish to learn, and I have to do en entire different research for it, since eBay sellers seem to have different opinions, and details on how it's done (some ask for a full restore and wipe out, others simply state it can't be done on 05.16.xx, other state that they can, and it gets confusing)

PS: when I upgraded to 6iOS, I forgot completely about the baseband, and it upgraded to 05.16.08

    Maybe this one?

Took me 20-30 seconds to find this in the iClarified.com tutorials :(

And since details don't appear to be your forte, I will advise you ahead of time use the correct (but older) version of Redsn0w specified in the tutorial if you expect this to work.
And it is sometimes necessary to run the downgrade a few times to make it "stick"
