Questions about XCode

I'm trying to get my head around XCode... (Used to M$ VC++).

Firstly, when using the debugger to examine variables, I have one class that will display correctly with a little triangle by it to see the member variables, and another class which will not show any data - (the type is shown as 'struct foo' and the value shows as {...}). The two classes do not differ very significantly in their prototypes. I tried playing with the summary editor and got no results at all. Curiously the expression viewer thing will not show the contents of the object either (out of scope msg). Any suggestions?
(BTW this is a c++ carbon app)

On another project, I have created a custom build (the code came with a gcc makefile). Everything seems to work until I run the app bundle (in XCode) - the program runs but no menu appears at the top of the screen. This is a C carbon app so do I have to add frameworks or other stuff to the project?
If I run the app direct from a Finder window it works fine.

    I'd appreciate any help, thanks,
