After a couple months of trying to decide whether or not to jailbreak my iphone 4 i finally went ahead and did it a while back using the easy "slide to jailbreak" website. I've been real happy with it, even though i only have Mywi, 3G unrestrictor and Intelliscreen...but those 3 apps have really come in handy and are well worth the jailbreak.

So...now i'm not sure what to do with the next versions of IOS out. When can we go ahead and upgrade our iphone version? Do i have to jailbreak again after i upgrade? do i have to do something to my phone before i upgrade or after? I've seen a few new jailbreaks out now like Limerain, am i supposed to use one of these versions? Do they work in tandem with my current jailbreak?

I've searched a bit and haven't been able to find many answers to these questions. I think the old jailbreak was so easy that some people like me who are otherwise fairly clueless when it comes to this stuff when ahead and took the plunge, and now i'm not sure where to go from here...but would like to get the updated versions of IOS if possible.

thanks for any help!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You are like me, kind of clueless with all this talk of basebands, and shsh and blobs. I would just leave it. Mine is jb'd the same way as yours, and I am just leaving it.

I tried to jb my iPod Touch this weekend, and I thought I had bricked it. Being on 4.1 and trying to use greenpois0n and limera1n, just not worth it. Yours works now, just leave it.

If you are not sure what you are doing it is probably best to leave it. To answer some of your questions more specifically. To upgrade and use the new tools you will lose the existing JB when you upgrade to 4.1 and you will have to use one of the new tools like limera1n or Greenpo1son after the upgrade. Jailbreakme.com only works on version 4.0.1 and previous versions of firmware only.

I'm fine leaving it for now, but i really want the enhancements of the new OS...stuff like the HD pictures (i use the camera a ton), game center etc. I can wait it out a while but certainly want to upgrade at some point when it becomes simple/safe enough to accomplish with little risk.

I'm not sure what i'm doing with the new jailbreaks yet, but if they are a safe process i'm sure i can figure it out. I'm definitely not an expert but if i can figure out how to build my own desktop w/out any prior knowledge of building a computer, i should be able to figure out how to use limerain or greenpoison w/out totally trashing my phone. I just want to make sure those jailbreaks are relatively safe (ie not beta, won't brick your phone if you maybe make a mistake) and you don't have to be a part-time Iphone developer to figure out the process.

It's not really all that hard to do if you are not unlocked and don't care about an unlock. If not then:
If you want to make things easier on yourself get pkgbackup from cydia,$4-5 and that will take what you have on your phone now from cydia so when you rejailbreak later it put all your stuff back on your phone.

First you need to back up your phone on iTunes.
Then download the new firmware and install. (I went ahead and restored from my backup after the firmware update, some say you shouldn't)
Download your preferred JB method I used greenpois0n so I'll comment on that.
At this point I had my iPhone 4 running 4.1 with all my app store stuff on it.
Now I ran greenpois0n (follow the instructions on the computer screen)
Now it's jailbroken. There should be an icon, white, with the name installer I think. Open this and install cydia, and delete the installer. You may have to restart the phone at this point to make cydia show.
Then you reinstall your cydia apps or run pkgbackup.

Super easy. Also you may want to go to google and search for "jailbreak matrix" they have videos of how to do the above.

Thanks Justin, went ahead and did this yesterday and it all worked. Freaked out a bit at work because i ran into the 3014 error and couldn't get phone out of restore mode, but went home and tried it on my home network and restore worked fine. Then was very simple and easy...thanks!

Make sure to d/l Tiny Umbrella and start saving your SHSH blobs. If something goes wrong and you have to restore, you'll still be able to jailbreak again.
