Im planning on ipod touch in a few weeks and i have a few questions
1. should i get a refurbished 1g and jailbreak it or get a 2g and wait for a jailbreak
2. if you jailbreak is it possible to use the app store on itunes
3. what are the things you should not do with a jailbroken itouch to keep it not messed up

Thanks in advance

1. Not really. Currently the 2G (2.1.1) is impossible to jailbreak (well, it has been done ONCE) but I predict that will change once 2.2 is released.
2. Yes, and for free. Athough, I don't think that is right.
3. As the other poster said, don't go into an Apple store for help with your iPod when it's jailbroken. And don't modify it too much or it may be bricked, however that rarely happens now.

PS ~ you're lucky I didn't correct you for calling it an iTouch.. Well, this sorta counts. XD

It seems inevitable that it will be broken eventually, but I'm not sure why 2.1.1 hasn't been broken yet. Does anyone know how long it took to break the 1.x releases? I wasn't paying attention back then. Maybe a month isn't enough time.

Free apps.
Cool 3rd party apps.
Background.
Customization.
Many different themes.
Etc, etc.

1. App store has free apps and paid apps. Some of the "free apps" on jailbroken iPods are illegal cracked or hacked versions of paid apps in the app store. Basically pirating apps.
2. Waste of time/effort. You only do it to show off and not for function.
3. read above.
4. read above.

Jailbreak can sometimes slow down your iPod/iPhone. 5 of my friends have iPod touches. All of them are sluggish/choppy/laggy. Another 3 have iPhones and the 3G as well. Same result. They've all restored multiple times over from scratch. No dice. And one mistake when you are sshing into it, you might have to restore the entire thing. If you really have your eyes on jailbreaking, iPhone Dev Team will have it done sooner or later.

2.1 has been jailbroken, thousands of times... it's what the 1G iPod touch runs on.
Although, you can't jailbreak a 2G because it runs on 2.1.1
