iPhone Questions: Unlocked SIM vs unlocked iphone

Unfortunately the search capability on the forum has been disabled due to a recent hack so I have to ask this question:

What is the difference between a iphone that has been 'UNLOCKED' vs a SIM that has been UNLOCKED?

The reason I ask is that I did an unlock on my ip5 about 6 months ago in anticipation of going to Europe and using a local SIM rather that get phoqued by ATT. I did an imei check on my phone and it says SIM lock = unlocked.

There's no unlocked sim.
If your phone is unlocked then it can use any gsm sim card in the world.

It just means that the device is unlocked for any gsm SIM card, device unlocked. No such thing as sim unlocked.
