Messages uses the proximity sensor to record messages if you'd rather hold it up to your ear and speak. Once you move the phone from your ear, it will send automatically. When you are putting your phone in your pocket, it is activating this.

Also, my girlfriend is running iOS 7 and when I tested the voice messages she received an audio attachment (not in the style of iOS 8, but in the form of a physical file she had to open separately.) which she could listen to. She is, however, running iOS 7.0.5 and I don't know if this applies with anyone running anything higher.

Hope that helps.

Okay, thanks for letting me know. Can see this being a possible source of confusion once iOS 8 is released to the general public. I have a few contacts who never update their devices -- it's going to be interesting trying to keep in my mind who is on 8 and who isn't!

You're welcome! And yeah, Apple could do something about that prior to the public release, like removing the mic button if the person doesn't have iOS 8. For group chats, I guess the mic would be there and non-iOS 8 users just wouldn't get the recording.

They get nothing. I tried sending an audio recording to my friend on 7.1.1 to see what would happen, and it just showed the three dots indicating that I was typing.

People on older iOS versions will still receive the message as an audio attachment that they can tap on to open and play back. It still works, just slightly differently than just playing back seamlessly right in the message as in iOS 8.

I usually dictate my messages with Siri. I'd tap the microphone to activate Siri, put the phone up to my ear to speak my message, and the voice-message feature would activate. I did not touch the screen, it auto-activated.

As someone else has stated, this isn't true. iOS 7 users do receive the audio message however to shows up completely differently than it does in iOS 8.

But that's the thing, I've NEVER had any problem with it since being in a pocket doesn't have the "skin" sense. Never butt dialed anyone, never had anything activate in my pocket before until now

I don't believe you, because preventing this is the exact reason the lock screen exists. Security is an added benefit.

Also there is no "skin" sense. There's a proximity sensor which is used among other things to turn off the display when you're on the phone and you hold it up to your ears for the same reasons, but that isn't used to sense whether or not it's in your pocket.

Lock the phone before you put it in your pocket and you'll avoid all of these problems forever. Until you do that it is user error.

So how does the Siri raise to speak feature work in relation to this kind of thing (given that it seems to be quite similar)?

I believe it uses the proximity sensor, perhaps in addition to the motion sensors registering an 'upward' motion.

Sorry about that... I guess it had to do with the fact that we weren't on wifi and I assumed it wouldn't work before the message actually got sent. Thanks for clarifying!

Really?

This is a non issue !

nobody I know ever puts their phone away without locking it no matter the make or model be it android or iOS. This is just a borderline stupid complaint, you should always lock your phone for privacy, security, battery drain and if for no other reason so you don't touch the screen or do stupid things like this.

The feature works fine and in this case Steve really would be saying your using it wrong, and I would find it quite humourous if come the next keynote Tim gives a demo on how you should use your phone.

This is exactly whays happening! I forgot about that from the keynote! I knew I wasn't holding the button and sending it after!

And as others have stated iOS 7 users DO get the audio recording.

Well I guess I'm "nobody" because I've done this twice already.....

Just because it doesn't affect you doesn't mean it's not an issue.
I have my phone set to autolock in 1 minute. To lock it is an extra step not needed before this beta.

Exactly. The next time these fools make a thread saying something works, I'll be sure to tell them it's just "user error"

Who are you, and why should I care that you don't believe me? Does your phone screen respond when you try using them with gloves on? Can you make the phone respond if you place a piece of fabric between the screen and your finger?

It is a bug. Siri's "raise to speak" doesn't activate when I place my phone in my pocket with it unlocked so neither should this.

I have my phone set to lock itself after 1 minute. Do you know why the iPhone has that feature? So as to prevent the hassle of locking it yourself.

Please think before you start replying to threads.

this is probably one of the worst features of iOS 8 ... i am not going to start sending voice notes to people when i can text them, I'm sure no one else wants to hear the stupid conversations i have with my friends.

i also had the problem of sending people accidental messages. if you don't lock the screen and the proximity sensor is activated it starts recording (as someone stated).

Apple, please incorporate a feature to disable this stupid voice memo thing or just get rid of it all together.

So lock the screen! Not difficult.

If you don't lock a touchscreen phone, things are going to happen.

sometimes i keep the screen on for various reasons. also touch id seems to unlock the phone sometimes if i am trying to get something out of my pocket.

regardless ... i still don't think most people are going to be replacing texts with voice notes

What reasons? Maybe we can suggest alternative solutions.

All I know is I never have these kinds of problems and I always lock the screen when I put the phone away.

There's a guy at work who's always pocket dialling and texting everyone as he just will not lock the screen when he puts his phone away.

The lock after 1 minute feature is clearly meant for those situations where you're sat around with your phone out on a table, constantly picking it up to browse, send / read messages etc. You should always lock your phone when you put it in your pocket. ALWAYS.

It's a touch screen device with sensors on it, for heaven's sake.

you are getting off the topic of audio recording vs why i keep my phone screen on.

to appease you i keep it on for when i am cooking and need to keep looking at a recipe.

That makes sense, but it's not wise to put it in your pocket between glances; just leave it out somewhere.

Either leave it out or lock the screen. There are multiple solutions available.

It only might happen when you are in messages and don't lock the screen when you put the phone away and don't need the screen on. Seems like fairly infrequent circumstances for mor than even the vast majority. The way to disable accidental messages already exists and it's by locking the phone. That said, perhaps there's something more sensitive about the current implementation that needs to be tweaked so that it's more in line with the Siri raise to speak feature that seems fairly similar and supposedly doesn't seem to cause these types of issues.

Just because you weren't running into issues with it until now doesn't mean you were using it properly either.

One can leave their car unlocked all the time and nothing might happen for years and then suddenly start experiencing items stolen from it, and while it would be nice to solve the problem of why someone might steal something and that it shouldn't be happening, the obvious and practical and really the only solution that would actually work in the end would be to lock the car each time despite the fact that leaving it unlocked was faster and more convenient and worked just fine for years.

Please link me the document that states this as doctrine.

1. Click the home button or hide the keyboard before putting the phone in your pocket. Easy fix and you can avoid any "embarrassing" messages. Or just hit the lock button.

2. A lot of times when a new UI feature is introduced it inadvertently changes user behavior. With the iOS 7 introduction one thing that just popped in my mind that people were complaining about is the ability to unlock the phone by sliding anywhere on the screen, which was leading to phones getting unlocked inside people's pockets. As far as I know that was never "fixed" by Apple so I'm not sure this will either.
