Quick Couple Questions from New Mac User

So I just got my new Macbook this morning and have been working on it all day and I think I am getting the hang of it with all the keyboard shortcuts and all and its getting easier, and easier. But a couple questions:

1. Is it possible to customize to toolbar at the top, like ive seen some people have red ones, how do you customize it?

2. What freeware would you guys recommend to get? Such as downloading programs, anything actually?
