Try Image Capture- it's already installed on your Mac.

Image Capture requires a driver for your scanner. That driver is usually installed when you install the software that ships with your equipment.

The OP should look into TWAIN SANE. It is an opensource project that develops scanner drivers for numerous and sundry scanners.
