Firstly, I have had good hands on time with both the iPad2 and the first gen.
iPad WAS laggy until the 5.1 update, now it is pretty snappy so I have absolutely no complaints.
HOWEVER, if you consider the difference between the two units side by side, there is no comparison. You plan on reading? The iPad2 is light, the resolution is improved and it has got a camera for such things as facetime etc. iPad2 is also still quite strongly supported and will be able to endure quite a few updates to the OS over the next year or so.
I would go with the iPad2 just because it is a "better" product, still supported, and is faster and more able to handle tasks that you might be surprised to find yourself doing. Meaning, it allows for you to make broader use of the device if you end up discovering that you favor some of the newer features.
What would suck, is you settling for a device and finding out that you really wanted/needed the better one. For 100.00 I would consider it an investment in a product that still has life and support to it.
I have the iPad and will not be updating past 5.1. Also, all of the apps are going to be further tailored to the more powerful machines.
Either way, I am sure you will enjoy whatever one you choose.
Good luck! Let us know what you decided
