I mentioned it in the first post. I've tested that Preview does not have any problems:

The only thing at fault is Quick Look and there's really no substitute for it when I have to search in Spotlight and browse for a particular document.

I see. Then indeed it's clearly an issue with Quick Look. I'd assume that both QL and Preview are using the same rendering engine but apparently they are not. Or Quick Look is using a simplified subset of the engine.

I wouldn't expect Apple to change it anytime soon (although who knows...)

If previewing images on a constant basis is important for you, you may try to use Adobe Bridge (it's free). Although you'll probably also need to use a different search routine instead of Spotlight.

Taking a screenshot of an RFC page (used Firefox's "Take Screenshot" command) really illustrates the issue (screenshot attached) as it's saved as a very long and narrow PNG file.

I also hadn't noticed before that Quick Look is adding rounded borders that obscure the edges of PNG files, but does not do that to JPG files (used Preview.app to export the PNG image to JPG as a test).

I've been keeping track of this issue, retesting with every macOS release, and sending feedback to the open ticket on Apple's Feedback Assistant (that Apple summarily ignores to this day). I don't hold any hope that Quick Look will be fixed in Tahoe seeing the problem continues to be present in Sequoia.

I've made my own pixel art editor and have added QuickLook support for a new image format. Interestingly, the preview of that is razor sharp! But the system QuickLook preview of the PNG equivalent is blurry. I think Apple is doing something funky.

macOS 14, Retina display.

here's an interesting discovery. if i quicklook them individually, bmp and png are blurry. but if i quicklook multiple selected items from Finder, and use cursor keys to flip between them: bmp & png (or bmp & pep & png, as here) then bmp becomes pixel perfect. curious! bug?

I'm not sure I'm seeing it in the video. The first image in the set is PNG and it's always blurry, but every cycle into the BMP image looks correct to me.

It also throws me off a little that the image shifts slightly down when previewing the next one in the set too.
