I have an external hard drive from my old computer which ran Vista. Now when I plug it into my Mac, it becomes read only. So I looked around and found macFUSE, which lets me write NTFS files onto my hard drive from my mac.

My question is, will this erase everything from my external hard drive when I add files to it?

No, there's no need to worry - it'll work fine, i've done it for a long time.

Not sure if you need the program NTFS-3G too though. I've had that installed from the start, so not really sure how it behaves without!

Yes, I believe so, although I think it's more the other way around. NTFS-3G enables you to write to NTFS formatted drives, but you need MacFuse to make it work.
