I figured I'd jump on the beta now that things are very near release so I am seeing iOS 18 beta 6 being offered. I think that's a bit weird as I'm reading beta 8 is released to the public beta testers?

Edit; I pulled the trigger anyway and I'm showing 22A5350a which appears to be beta 8 according to searches. Well OK then.

Developer beta 8 = public beta 6.

Public beta startet with developer beta 3 so they are "two behind" when counting. The builds however are the same.

Thank you, I did not know that. I guess that makes things extra confusing when the same build has two different names.

People used to get the public beta because they had to be developers to get the developer beta. Or they wanted a couple days delay between the dev beta and the public beta to see if there were any showstopping bugs. But now it is all the same and released so closely that there is zero reason to be on a public beta as far as I can tell.

Yeah, it can be a bit confusing with the beta versions sometimes. I had a similar experience with iOS updates where the version numbers didn’t always match what was expected. Glad you got beta 8—it’s usually more stable and has the latest features.

They are getting too different groups and likely binning feedback accordingly. I'd have to think dev feedback gets more attention anyway.

This late in the game I figure it's darn near done, might as well see what's coming out next week.

It is the end of the 18.0 betas, RC is getting quite closer now...

If one were to install the available public beta today, are they installing the same OS that will be released in a few days?

iOS 18 will be released to everybody tomorrow, Monday, 16 Sep, so if I were you I would just wait a bit longer to install it.

The current iOS 18 RC has a build number of 22A3354. If tomorrow’s release has the same build, then yes, they will be identical. If not, you would be offered to update to this higher build.

We can check this by turning off beta update in settings > general > software update.
