Will I be able to use my iMac 2011 as an external for a retina macbook pro? If so, do I have to turn the iMac on, like, go into the whole OS or is there a way just to turn on the display. Thanks.

Yes. And yes, you will have to turn on the imac.

Thanks for the answer, another question, can I use the iMac's I/O (such as USB, Ethernet, etc) for the macbook pro (just like I would on an apple cinema display), or is it limited to just the display?

I'll test that for you, will report soon

Result:
It only uses the display.

The 27-inch iMac works like any other external display while it is in Target Display mode, except that you cannot access its built-in iSight or USB and FireWire ports. To change display settings, open System Preferences on the external source computer and choose Display from the View menu.
