quick question about image editing software

What is the best image editing program for mac that is free or allows you to download a free trial? I need something that will let me cut of images from a picture, specifically. IE cut out a person from the background.

The Gimp... but not the easiest to use

Graphic Converter is not free but well worth the price
Pixelmator is not free but worth the price

There's "Paintbrush"

But, give Preview's QuickMask a try. It's intended to do just what you describe. There is also a similar feature built-in to iWeb.

For image adjustments, Preview has several, but iPhoto has a more complete set. Either one can crop and/or scale.

I use Paintbrush for simple things, Graphic Converter for others, and Photoshop for complicated things.

Pixelmator Rocks!!!

Has taken about 60% of my workload from Photoshop because it is so much faster and prettier. I love it!

In fact it's so 'Apple' that I reckon Apple might even buy this one day to bundle with iLife.
