Quick Question About Restoring From Backup?

I am trying to figure out how backups are "organized" within iTunes.

Situation:

1 PC Lap Top
1 iTunes Account
2 iPhones sync to the 1 iTunes account.

So, if I plug in my 3G, and do a restore from backup, does it let me select a backup, or is it automatic?

If it is automatic, how does it know which backup to grab between the two backed up iPhones?

How does it work exactly?

If you have more than 1 backup then you can select from the list.

Any idea how they are serialized or does that matter?

If I plug in a new 3GS will it still just let me pick from the list even if the list is of other phones?

Yea just plug it in and hit restore and you can select to set it up as a new phone or to restore from backup. I set my 3GS up this morning from a backup up of my 3G just a moment before works like a charm.

I just wanted to make sure I can pick the right backup.

I don't want my wife's crap on my phone.
