iPod touch quick question about updating itouch itunes list

Last night I cleaned up my itunes on my mac at home and connected the touch and it said syncing. Once it was done nothing had changed on the itouch. The same songs were there eventhough I cleared them out on my mac.

Anyone know how to do this properly? am I missing something?

update: Im at work but I think I may have turned on manage my own music by accident in itunes.. Not sure..
