I've just replaced my battery, so I suspect it will drop over time.

Yeah I'd say 48-72 hours for me...much less than my iBook, which could go well over a week, close to two.

The iBook sleeps when closed but the PBook can still be used, with an external display for example. Would this have anything to do with it?

It shouldn't...when you use the PB with an external display, you're actually waking it up while closed. I think the power drain comes from the brighter sleep light on the PB. 😉
