Yes... it plays back multiple different audio and video files in many different codecs, it records audio, video and screen recordings. Allows for basic editing and trimming of clips. What exactly is your question? Also, this is not MacBook Air related, you should post in a software related forum such as Mac Apps

I use it every day to watch videos and listen to audiobooks and podcasts! I love how simple it is—just a no-frills but pleasent UI for playing whatever media I open. It doesn't try to take over library management like iTunes et al, and it doesn't have a million buttons I never use like VLC.

I've actually been unable to find an equivalent on Windows or Linux. The closest thing is mpv in terms of a simple UI, but it has all of these hotkeys I sometimes hit by accident, and other oddities like automatically closing the window as soon as I hit the end of file.

I too wonder why Apple keeps shipping this. I know its a media player but seems more of a relic from the past like the DVD player. It hasn't received any advancements like Pages or iTunes. You can't use arrow keys to skip forward or backward.

I don't know whats the equivalent on Windows, there used to be WMP. Also it worries me the rarity of video players out there, currently all I know of is VLC, QT, and there was one called Mplayer and another one that does not come to my mind now.

QTP is useful, but needs updating. For example, many cameras now capable of shooting 10-bit, which don't play. But like many Apple things, tries token simplicity up front while offering functionality if you know about it. Re-encoding to HEVC, for example. It's notify only player, but I am glad it's there.

You used to be able to add third party codecs to QuickTime. You could install Perian, and suddenly QuickTime was able to play all manner of weird formats.

Then Apple ripped it out in OS X 10.9.

QTP 7x was the Swiss army knife of audio and video. While I don't know, I suspect the internal discussion centered around the cost-benefit of moving to 64-bit and multi-threading. And somehow convincing all the 3rd parties to do the same. I ran them side-by-side for years, but now don't miss it at all.

Oh, to be clear, I'm still talking about QuickTime X. You could add third-party codecs to QuickTime X through OS X 10.8.

I never liked QuickTime 7. Ugly interface.
