Not necessarily. If it says "an upgrade," then it could be an early upgrade at a reduced discount, not a full discount. If it says "standard upgrade," then it's a full discount.

As a general rule, if your plan is $100 a month, the primary line is eligible after a year. Less than $100 is 18 months. However, anyone eligible in 2010 will be eligible this month.

Is that $100 before or after taxes?

I have yet to see a screen shot that says standard upgrade, all the ones I have seen have been like the screen shot above.

You are correct.

That is the one you will get if you are eligible. If you are not.. You will get a message saying we can offer you an early upgrade at a discount rate and your full upgrade date is XX/XX/XX. Or it will say you don't qualify for any discount, only no commitment price.

So what's the rule behind the $18 fee? Mine says they'll waive the $18. I've got only about a month of contract time left, but I know there are people with also very short contact left and still have $18 fee.

Does anyone have a clue as to how much "a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price" actually is for the 32GB iPhone 4? $399? $499? I've only seen prices for the fully-subsidized and no-contract versions, so I'm guessing the "higher price" will be somewhere between those two figures.

I don't think this is correct (hope not)

this is my message. Anyone know how much the discount will be?

By the way, I've got a family plan with two iPhones (both 3GS bought on launch day with new contracts). AT&T says I can upgrade my main line at the upgrade price and the second line at the "discounted higher price."

I have yet to see a screen shot that says standard upgrade, all the ones I have seen have been like the screen shot above.

I stand corrected. On the AT&T website, "an upgrade" is distinguished from "standard upgrade," the former being early upgrade/partial discount and the latter being full discount. However, via text standard upgrades are shown as "an upgrade," while early upgrade has the extra prompt "A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available...."

Early upgrade. 399/499

I just got the 3Gs last November and I am already eligible for a discounted upgrade. Is this because I have been with them for a while? Or does everyone get a chance at a discounted upgrade?

so this means i can get the new iphone4 for 199/299 extend the 2 year contract plus 18$ fee? correct? got my 3GS 6/27/09

I got the same message but i bought my 3GS on well... i dont really remember lol, but i know it was after july but before 2010

I'm confused.

This seems like a mess without rhyme or reason.

I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens when we pull the trigger.

If you get it, great. If you don't, call them and beg or something :D

I don't know.

Don't you have to have a contract that is set to expire this year to get the expedited upgrade? I'm due to upgrade July 2 but my contract is new and won't run out until 2012. My upgrade date hasn't changed yet. There isn't still a chance that it will, right?

so im eligible for the upgrade since I have had the 3G since launch day, but I have to pay the $18 upgrade fee, why is it waived for some people and not others?
