If you've got Winterboard installed there's plenty of themes to make Bite's icon the original Messages icon.
was hoping to just find an icon and replace it through ssh. id rather avoid winterboard
YOu can do that too, just be sure to back up the original in case everything goes down the poop.

That's what I do, though I use iFile and just copy it over from another folder on the phone when there's an update. Winterboard's probably easier, but this is literally the only icon I change so it hasn't been a big deal.

I'm running 4.0 still, not sure if the location or process changed in 4.1. But what I did was copy my chosen icon into /private/var/mobile/Documents with the name icon@2x.png.
Whenever bite updates, in iFile, I navigate to the above and copy-replace file to:
/private/var/stash/Applications/biteSMS.app
Takes me all of around twenty seconds. I do have the original backed up on my hard drive, but this way ssh isn't needed, don't even need the computer since I store the icon on my phone.

Irealsms does everything bitesms does and then some.
All I ever read about comparisons of the two are things like bitesms is the best jailbreak app ever and awesome and "quintessential jailbreak app" (which, it is not since it lacks at least one feature than another app has), the best and blah blah. Anyone care to elaborate on why, besides that everyone says so?

Why don't you let us know why iRealSMS is better?
That would be useful, I've actually never seen anyone post much about iRealSMS yet. It would be nice to see what an actual user thinks about it.
From what I can see, iRealSMS has three features that bite doesn't, none of which I would use, for an additional $4. It does not have fully custom text ringtones for contacts, which I DO use. I also don't see the option of using a free, ad supported version beyond the trial, though I may have missed that as I only gave it a quick glance. That's a pretty big deal to some people.
I think bite is a better deal for the money, but I'm sure iReal users feel the same.

I did not say one was better than the other. Before IrishVixen posted, I had never read anything but how great bitesms was but not why...

Not a big deal to most but if you MMS alot I can see it beeing a plus with ireal.
