I missed that one, so the other differences I see are that iReal has the capability to use folders for organization, has an internal blacklist function, and can do text to voice. Each of those is probably a must have for some people.

Both these apps are relatively expensive as apps go, but either is a good price for an app you'll use as much or more than any other on your phone, if certain features are dealbreakers in your mind. For me, adding four features I wouldn't use versus one that I use constantly isn't worth the extra $4.

Does ireal let you use the app for free with just an advertising banner in the settings?

Not that I can see from their site--I don't have the app, was just kinda curious, so if anyone knows differently, please correct me. They do also appear to charge for some updates--there's a charge listed for going from version 1 or 2 to version 3.

That sucks.
Charge for updates?

Looks like it.

From the purchases page on their site:

If you have purchased iRealSMS 2.0, iRealSMS 1.x or iRealQuickSMS you can purchase an update to iRealSMS 3.0.

Update price is $1.21 USD, dunno what the charge for any of those versions was. Bite's site, for the record, says no charge for updates ever, which was why I noticed the iReal one.

I see.
A $1 for an update is not that bad but with Apple keep putting out newer iOS versions it would suck to keep paying to be able to use the app with newer firmware.

Uh, what? Why don't you read the post again?

Saying "Irealsms does everything bitesms does and then some. " made me think you were implying that iRealSMS was the better option so I was wondering why? If they both do the same thing minus a feature or two then I guess the fact that BiteSMS could be had for free and the paid version is cheaper makes it an easy choice imo.

I agree, it makes it a better deal for the money, as someone said.
I don't mind at all paying for good apps though. If all else is equal, I'd pay for the app that doesn't have ads.

QuickReply is a good one though it says it's depreciating software and is no longer supported (yet they still charge $1.99) for it.
