Has anyone else been experiencing lag issue with QS when a disk is inserted in the CD drive?

After houling this brand new, and heavy, paperweight around the city for tech service (3+ weeks) I sent it back to Apple for an exchange. The techs could never figure out the real issue with the first computer, but that doesn't matter because the newly delivered replacment HAS the same exact problem. Apple tech claimed only one known case, I find that hard to beleive, unless I have very bad luck.

Power is run through an APC, and the second G4 was out of the box, turned on, cd inserted and laaaaaaged.

Dual 800 mhz
512 Ram (factory)
Scsi card
250 Zip Drive
2-80 hard drives
56k modem

Process:
Insert disk, disk loads on desktop (slowly) computer slows down immediatly. Test by opening Simple Text and typing quickly, letters appearnce is four seconds after keystroke. Lag remains even after disk has been ejected.

strange

that happens all the time? every time?

I have a 867 Quicksilver and I dont have the problem. I have experiaced simmilar problems with other machines but it was not all the time. It happed more on systems with slower CD-ROMs and when the CD had many files at the root dirctory. Some times a little lag and some lag with openn applications. but with my G4... this happens even less offten.

Does it make a diffrence if your booted in OS 9 or OS X?

same problem...

I also work on an 867 MhzG4 and experience tha same problem. I didn't even realize until now that this occured only after I insert a CD into the computer. I was wondering also if anyone has experienced the computer freezing for a few seconds when a CD is inserted. (no mouse movement) This happens everytime...and only on my QS. I have a 266 Mhz Beige G3 desktop that doesn't even do this...

Please advise.

Virual Memory is off

The problem happens every time a disk is load. Suarkttam do you have a Zip drive also installed. I read somewhere that to alleviate the problem you can insert a Zip disk.

It took me 2 weeks to figure out it was the Superdrive, I thought it was firewire and other stuff.

I'll try booting to OSX, but that doesn't help me, all my programs are 9.0. Also, Apple had me update the firmware, boot with extensions off, detach SCSI card etc.

I just got this solution from another website and it works, the lag goes away. However I can not close the CD tray with the keyboard button and I am wondering what other features I will not be able to use.

>Is 9.2.1 installed?
>Maybe dropping back to 9.1- CD/DVD driver may help?

questions

what is the difference with having virtual memory on or off? could someone post an explanation as to the benefits and downsides?

Thanks.

Mac Solution

I just spoke with a "product specialist" at apple. If you insert a zip disk, and leave it in the lag goes away.

Turns out they have been having this problem with G4s that come factory installed with cd drives and Zip drives since September. An external zip drive may not be a problem. Wish they would have told me this a month ago when I had the first unit. They claimed I was the first one to report such a problem.

Apple recommends looking for updates on their site. Updates for what? I do not know, 9.2 uses the same Iomega and CD/DVD drivers as 9.1. After spending alot of money on this unit, I am completly disatisfied and disgusted with Apple tech support and their "affiliated" repair facilities.

Also, my 250 zip drive writes to 100mb zips very slowly; tech support says this is normal. Any thoughts?

i work quite frequently on the Quicksilvers, and i do also notice the pause in time on the computer when inserting a disc. i believe this problem is caused because it a dvd-r drive. this happens on almost every computer when inserting discs. it's just gonna happen, toughen up and quit your whinin.

The problem with that is that you cant put OS 9.1 on a Quicksilver. 9.1 came out before the Quicksilver did. Try booting off a 9.1 CD... it wont work. 9.1 doesnt know that the Quicksliver extitst... i dont think 9.2 does ethere... you need to have at least 9.2.1 on a quicksilver.
