oh wow, i used to have one of those hair dryer quicksilver (mdd) at my old job. damn that thing was loud. i liked the old case, but it looks like a toy. i prefer the more industrial look of the g5/mac pro.

The QS looked like a toy imo, very unprofessional. The G5/Mac Pros look and feel like they're high quality, built to last and generally feel much more professional than the plastic cases of old.

I think that the Quicksilver look has aged, and appears to be from a bygone era... and although time will surely tell, it's my opinion that the newer G5, and MacPro design is timeless.

I never owned one of those plastic Macs but I saw them in the shops at the time and thought they were pretty funky and leading edge.

However the Mac Pro/G5 design is a classic and a functional one at that - combined with an ACD monitor it is surely the most beautiful home computer ever made.

My dual 1GHz MDD G4 was probably my favorite computer I've ever owned, both in terms of its look and how it treated me.

If I could geek out for a moment and put the G4 vs. G5/Mac Pro machines in Star Trek context, here's what I always think.

i used to prefer the quicksilver model over the mac pro/G5, but slowly it grew on me. as far as looks go, i think the quicksilver is a better looking case. but the mac pro case is just so clean and large.

ive notice some ppl have talked about how much faster the mac pro is to the PM G4....i dont think thats the idea of the thread fellas

i definetly think the quicksilver is better looking.. but lately with apple, newer doesnt mean better in terms of looks.. i mean, the g4 cube and the g4 imac were simply gorgeous. it seems like they've lost some imagination with the transition to intel..

on a simliar note, i have a hard time seeing any better of a computer case than the mac pro one. that goes for the pb/mpb laptops. how much better of a case can apple really make...cant wait and see whats going to happen to the imac

ditto, i liked it better whent he designs of apples computers appealed to basically mostly apple users than the PC-ish design of the mac pro

I like the looks of ncc-1701-E over D.. :p I also like the looks of the Mac Pro over the Quicksilver design. I have them sitting next to each other here, too.

I'm not too big on the clear plastic.

I love the aluminum though. :)

I wish I could get an aluminum mouse and keyboard to match my aluminum Mac Pro and 23" ACD.

Too bad my MacBook is plastic. :(

Back at the turn of the millenium, the plastic look was considered futuristic. Teenagers were wearing PVC clothes and glow in the dark jewelry like the kids in the movie Hackers. It was a fad. Now the chunky plastic look of the Quicksilvers, et al, looks rather childish. Even the old Studio Displays and the beloved Cube now look like Fisher Price toys.

Also, other than a $10,000 VoodooPC, I have never seen a PC with a high-quality thick aluminum case like the PowerMac G5 and Mac Pro. I like the current look, but I can't wait to see what Apple comes up with next.

I juuuuust replaced my Quicksilver with a Mac Pro and find I prefer the cool powerful look of the Aluminum - and it's squarer meaning it fits to my desk better.

... but then, we're all arguing over opinion right?

remember, the reason quicksilver and the green g3 models look so cool at the time is because they were replacing boring beige cases...
