Same here. Protools workstations really dislike the 7.1.1 upgrade; that is a very clear indication of a bad QT release if previously smooth systems give beachballs after the QT upgrade...

Actually it points out the poor programming on Digidesign's part more then it does with Apple's work. ProTools has been a fragile app since version one (ProDeck and ProEdit)

BMPL fixed!

Burning Monkey Puzzle Lab is no longer broken.

QT 7.1 broke it (causing it to hang on startup), forcing Freeverse Software to issue a "fix" that involved disabling the background music.

With the 7.1.2 update, it once again works with the music.

And there was much rejoicing.

a full program download of QT everytime there is an update is what need fixe

That, too. Why on earth should Protools rely on QT anyway :p

Virtually all NLE apps use quicktime to play/handle media. There was even a very early NLE that was 100% QuickTime based, it did almost everything the then current version of ProTools could do (at the time I think PT was on version 1.4)

A lot of people don't realize that QuickTime also has an interactive/programmable layer, there has been some very slick stuff built with it over the years.

More to the point, QuickTime is Mac OS's multimedia API layer. Any time you write a Mac application using video or audio, it goes through QuickTime.

The visible pieces of QT (the QuickTime Player application and the QT web browser plugin) are fairly simple applications that make use of the QT API layer for all the interesting things they do.

Yes, I know. But Protools is cross-platform software and cannot depend on Quicktime which is not pre-installed in Windows systems. Neither can Digidesign rely on Quicktime because they sell (windows-based) embedded systems too.

Quicktime is a powerful framework, but Protools should not stop working whenever Apple makes changes in QT -- and that was just what was happening with QT 7.1.1 update. Don't know what to think; couldn't blame Apple as most apps are working, but couldn't blame Digidesign as their app should not have strong interaction with QT. I'm just sorry to see that QT 7.1.1 crippled Protools 7.1 running on 10.4.6 and I want it fixed pronto :p

Why did the release notes state that a new QT key would be required? I spent several minutes seraching limewire for a new key, only to discover my old key still worked, or rather Pablo's old key still works.

Not a good topic here. I think Pro is worth paying for. It is the foundation engine for OS X media.

The reason for the warrning is for those of us that have paid for older versions of FCP, FCE, or paid for a licence key for Pro before 7, the new version (if we already hadn't updated) would require us to get a new key. All of the Pro apps warn against upgradeing, as it may cause the program to stop working with out a new key. Apple only charges for major revisions, i.e. from 6.x to 7.x.

Now as for piracy- A person, who I thank when ever I can, lent me a key for a few weeks so I could finish a class asignment (Thank you!). Ultimatly I payed for the key, but never boasted about haveing a free version for the 2 week that I did. I worked hard to save for FCP and I was barely making rent at the time. It was still theft, but I also remedied the problem.

Stealing and borrowing keys happens, boasting about it is stupid. You could have omitted the whole Pablos key thing. P2P is cool and has legitimate purposes, don't help generate anti p2p sentiment, or bad PR for the sit. For you own protection, at the very least, don't post about where you get keys.

You kind of remind me of the guy that calls 911 to report his pot has been stolen.

Dangit, I just updated to 7.1.1 yesterday, geesh. I barely use quicktime anyways. Maybe I'll download it later when I don't mind rebooting.

A strange thing to say... No images while web browsing, no music from iTunes, not even a desktop image?

This is not true. ProTools does a great job embracing QT technology where it is needed for compatibility, and providing better-than-QT where needed. It's not trivial to get these worlds to interface properly. ProTools clearly states hardware and OS requirements for every version of their hard- and software. You're not supposed to install an OS X update or a QT update on a ProTools production machine unless ProTools has approved the update.
If you plan to use a non-Apple graphics card in your computer, check the ProTools web site. They clearly say which ones they have verified to be working, and they won't give you support if you don't comply.
I never had problems with ProTools systems this way.

First of all, shame on you for stealing QT Pro keys off of file sharing networks.

Second, new keys are only required for major upgrades (5 to 6, 6 to 7, etc.) Every QT update includes the notice that new keys might be required, because there are still many people using versions 4, 5 and 6.

seriously, idk what else quick time does than play videos. what else can you get by all these upgrades?? what else would you expect from a video-playing application??
