Hi,
Just wanted to confirm specifically MP3 audio in an Xvid .avi doesn't play with the combination of Quicktime 7.5 (latest) and Perian 1.1 (latest) ?

On a related note, can someone verify how Flip4Mac (plays .wmv and .wma) works with Quicktime 7.5?

Thanks!

Flip4Mac is working fine for me!

I wonder why Apple seems to like breaking add-ons like Perian.

Do they have a vested interest in keeping Quicktime from playing other formats?

I LIKE being able to watch my entire video collection through Front Row, damnit!

Stop breaking other video formats, Apple! If you don't want to support them, that's fine! But stop keeping other people from supporting them!

My machine will no longer start after applying the patch and trying to restart. Anybody know how to get over this?

having to use windows PC to post.

my macbook core duo won't boot up after this either. i had to archive and install to get it to work.

the iphoto library on my imac has also become corrupted after this update... i was in the process of changing my backup set-up, too, so no backup...

ugh.

Because it takes about a minute or so to reboot. People somehow think one minute loses them a great deal of productivity.

I don't really get why a reboot should ever be required in OSX. Linux normally doesn't require a reboot for anything (well save loading a new kernel). Everything can be unloaded and then the new thing loaded. Given OSX is BSD Unix, why would it NEED a reboot just to update Quicktime libraries?

Speaking non-authoritatively, Quicktime is tied into so many apps like iTunes and Finder that perhaps a reboot is required to get all that embedding working on the same level again.

I remember when OS X was announced. One of the "features" was no longer needing to reboot after software installs. So much for that feature.

Will Snow Leopard will be able to remedy the restart situation?

I updated last night and have had no problems with quicktime... yet.

It's not the 1 minute or so of reboot time that botheres me. I don't like restarts because I usually have a dozen or so documents, web pages, ssh sessions, BT downloads, and so forth going on. Restarting feels like somebody has unknowingly cleaned up my office desk that I kept my tax info on during the middle of tax season. It's a mental interruption that lasts far beyond the minute it tastes to restart.

Why do you feel the NEED to do the updates when they appear? Can't you QUIT the software update, or choose not to install the updates by un-checking the boxes... your computer will still operate just as well as it did before the updates became available... then update the next morning... That's what I do...:) Just a suggestion.

Edit:--Plus I get to read MacRumors to find out about all the quirks before I do my install.

Quicktime is much lower than that, it's as low as BSD itself, therefore a reboot is required. It's a main API of the system and sits below many of the Core services, OpenGL, OpenAL...

Do not confuse Quicktime Player, that is like Safari is to Webkit, simply a front end.

Not surprised. Apple's been screwing up such things with its recent updates to Quicktime. 7.4.5 broke Dolby Digital passthrough to Perian from .mov files, thus, my home theater Mini is still on 7.4.1.

I had the no-sound problem with some .avi files. What seemed to fix it was to re-install the latest Perian, restart the machine, and voila - sound where it should be.

For people with FCP studio, which contains Quicktime Pro, does upgrading quicktime to 7.5 create any problems in quicktime pro?

I installed this on my 2.4 C2D MBP, and then my computer wouldn't restart. I was going to bring it to the Apple Service Tech when I thought of something:

Reset the PMU.

And it worked! Who would have thunk that that kind of Apple voodoo would actually work! lol.

Thank god for pda cell phones...

I recently went on a small vacation and of course took my MacBook to watch movies and what not only to find that after the update my quicktime would not play the sound. not even flip4mac worked. I ended up doing a quick search online, and finding VLC which im familiar from my Windows days. I was surprised to see it was also available for Mac. So i dl and give it a shot. it works like a charm, plus you can turn the volume up to 400%. My friend in the backseat of the car could hear everything perfectly. So if you still have the no sound problem i would suggest taking a look at VLC Player.

Not happy...

I installed it on my dad's mini and it killed it. The mini was perfect beforehand (I had just scanned the drive and verified that everything was okay.)

After the install, the mini refused to restart. None of the tools fixed it (Disk Tools, TechTools, etc.).

On the phone with AppleCare for over an hour. Ended up doing an Archive and Install to get the machine back.

I ain't touching this update with my MacPro.

I'm fed up with QuickTime and this update didn't resolve any of my issues. It still starts automatically in the browser (streaming or not) despite having both options unchecked. It doesn't play hardly any formats (two, I think) and the third party codecs are utter crap. Playback is always choppy, too. Does I has to use Windoze to play media?

Far from it. Perian is one of the most stable third party plugins for Quicktime which plays a huge variety of different formats.
And Flip4mac is the best way to play back any windows media on the mac.
