Yah was going to say that. The beta really feels rough around the edges but I wanted it for WWDC's video. I think everyone who is freaking out over the intel switch really needs to see Steve's reasoning. Its legit IMHO. Only 20% RDF.

that video crashes quicktime in my powerbook all the time... may be i'll try using my intel pc (????????????)

Well, QT 7 for Windows is available.... (eh, Preview that is).

Makes one wonder: will QuickTime 8 be x86 only....?

100 times:

I shall allways pay attention to Steve...
I shall allways pay attention to Steve...
I shall allways pay attention to Steve...
I shall allways pay attention to Steve...
I shall allways pay attention to Steve...
I shall allways pay attention to Steve...
...etc

I love the quality of the H.264 codec even though it takes a lot of power to run it. I watched the keynote on my PowerMac G5 Dual 2 GHz and it was very smooth and of the highest quality. I could actually read the text on the screen behind Steve. Quicktime 7 rocks. It just needs to be more universal in what it can play/convert and a speed improvement would be nice.

What the hell is this "preview"?? "First look...?"

I'm confused.

IF porting PPC apps is so easy then it should be equally as easy to port QT over, without releasing Beta/Preview/StrippedDown/CockedUp QT, non?

If you mean the QT 7 preview - it's being ported to Windows on Intel, not OSX on Intel. BIG difference!

of course, of course, OF COURSE!!! Thanks a bundle. I should probably watch the keynote now....

Blue Ray Imminent?

Does the concept of a Universal Binary make anyone else feel that the Blue Ray format is just around the bend? I know this is obvious, but does shipping two binaries mean that the disk needs to hold 2x as much information?

With the new Final Cut Suite getting close to 50GB toes that not mean it will be 100GB when it is compiled for PPC and Intel?

You'd hope they'd still include 2 "versions" of the software. I'm still confused at to what new software will run on and how much longer our Macs now will be supported. I'm guessing a while, but does that mean eventually 2 "versions" of 10.5 on one DVD? 2 DVDs? Or are these Universal Binaries going to make that a moot point?

Anyone have anything more concrete? Right now it seems like either it's not really fleshed out, or we just haven't been told the game plan yet.

I was being sarcastic.

It will be some getting used to: an x86 version for Mac OS X, an x86 version for Windows, and a PPC version for Mac OS X.
One can assume that the PPC and x86 versions for Mac OS X will be in one package to make it as easy as possible for the users. Will be interesting.

For several years to come I'd be willing to bet there will be two download buttons, as always. Quicktime for Mac, and Quicktime for Windows. No differentiation on processor architectures, just fat binaries.

Just watched the keynote and was thinking that this was about Apple adding x86 hardware and transforming OSX into a universal OS, capable of running on both PPC and x86 hardware.

By using Xcode 2.1 to produce universal binaries, developers can create software that will still run on PPC systems and the new x86 systems. Only one version of the app software is needed and as it is installed, it is tailored to your specific system. (not a programer - could be wrong)

This would leave the door open to allow Apple to return to the PPC or even to continue to produce PPC macs. Maybe the intel based systems with DRM for consumer boxes running iTunes/iMovie stores, High end PPC desktop and servers? Or maybe just the ability to pick and choose hardware from both sides to offer to best hardware/software combo year in and year out.

Just a thought...

I normally wouldn't care about quicktime on windows, but it actually let me watch the wwdc keynote at a decent quality (my powerbook couldn't handle the stream).

Worked fine on mine last night (12" PB, 512MB, 1.5GHz).

This is not the case. You have to realize that the 50 GB isn't all binary. In fact I'm certain it is mostly _not_ binary. You probably look forward to maybe a few gigs more, not a double sized distribution. That is the great thing, since most of the size in an Application is 'resources' which are cross platform already.

You have the same PowerBook as I have. I got the 400Kbps stream. Worked wonders for me.

Back on the subject, I am extremely happy that WebObjects is now free. I didn't want to pay $99 for it with a $99 Student Developer's Account.

Now I'll have to see if it's better than ASP.NET v2.0.

This is especially true in Final Cut. Nearly all of those 50GB is comprised of audio loops for Soundtrack Pro, Motion-related media (LiveFonts, animated backgrounds, etc.), and DVD Studio menu template assets. The only stuff that will double in size is actual program and plugin binaries, which are a small fraction of the total size of the Final Cut Studio package.

Is the stream available in HD? I have the same powerbook in your sig, but with half the Ram, runs really smooth, QT 7, Tiger. Movie info window shows a constant 24 fps and I sure don't see any slowdown.

It crashed on my Dual 1.25GHz G4 also (QT7/Tiger)

After about 6 seconds of the stream , quicktime player crashes. Tried it several times and even rebooted.

Not even close! This is going to be much better than people may be thinking.

Go into your applicatoins folder and find Safari, and get info. You'll see that it's about 21 MB.

Now, control-click on Safari and Show Package Contents. Open the Contents folder, then the MacOS folder inside that. You should now see an icon called Safari, a black box with "exec" written in green. That's the actual binary. Get info and it's only 1 MB. So, overall Safari would grow by that 1 MB to include the intel binary, the other 20 MB is data and can be shared. (Lots of Sarafi's executable code is really hidden away in the system libraries, but that's true for all the other programs too.)

The proportion of actual program code to data will vary, but you can peek into other OS X programs the same way to get a rough idea of how much they will really grow.

Very concise iMeowbot, here's a similar comparison.

Lots of games offer binary only downloads. Warcraft 3/I think World of Warcraft include them on the same disc. Anyways, the Neverwinter Nights binaries for linux download is only 5.3 megabytes. The download for the "resources" needed for the game on every platform is 1.2 gigs.

There won't be very much overhead to this.

Yesterday I got quicktime 7 for my win. box. Its nice so far it plays alot more types for me (i think). Also did the keynote always have the 3 sizes? I don't remeber that. Also its very crisp on the full screen.

Question - is the XCode update available to everyone, or only developers? And is it Tiger only? Just wondering, because I'm trying to get into this sort of thing and I'm still in Panther (not really interested in paying $160 for OS improvements that my iMacG3 can't even do 90% of, will wait for next comp maybe). I forget, what XCode version came with Panther? My uni courses require me to use Visual C++ for assignments and stuff, would XCode suffice for running simple C++, or is it a completely different idea?

Here's something that I haven't seen pointed out anywhere else:

"With this release, WebObjects is now part of the Xcode 2.1 Developer Tools distribution."

This comes directly from the Release Notes!

It used to be, I believe, $799 for a single development and single deployment license. Now, the development tools are included in Tiger (Xcode 2.1) and the Deployment tools are in Tiger Server.

this is awesome for people who use webobjects
