quicktime has most addons but random .avi files need more

i swear i downloaded a bunch of different ones even that i do not need but might need in the future.
this is from the page where quicktime tells you to go from the apple site

so my question is.
where can i find what i actually need to watch these.

is there a way i can tell from the file what i need extra?

anything of that nature.







i would really appriciate it a lot if someone helped me find this because i feel like i am back on a windows computer when i have something like this.

Have you tried Perian?

Also, when QuickTime has trouble playing video, I'll use VLC.

wow that was magical
i love the install of perian
why can't others do the same, ie. going into the library and put it in quicktime folder and such

perian worked.
