Quicktime 6

Does anyone think QuickTime 6 will actually support the playback of MOST avi's and not just the few obscure codecs that happen to match QuickTime's liking? I hope so.

The short answer is YES and NO. YES, because the primary problem with most AVIs these days is not the codec, but a non-standard file format encoding which Quicktime didn't know how to handle and screws up the sound and playback. Rumors are QT6 will finally support this (I certainly hope so). This is the reason you have to use DivX doctor or AVI2Mov to read most AVIs.

NO, because the second problem with most AVIs these days is that they use some variation of the DivX codec, which is a PC hack of a codec that M$ was using with windows media files. The parallel hack for macs was never as good because there was only one unoptimized beta of the codec for Macs in the first place. However there are now not one but TWO early reverse-engineered codecs available now, so you can get them from divx.com or divx.jamby.net. They're just not standard. So you can get them.

To make a long story short, hopefully when QT6 comes out you can finally just download an AVI and watch it, provided you have the right codecs installed, and they should be available, although you may have to look for them. It was never a matter of Quicktime's liking, you ignoramus.

exactly

Ignoramus? Think you could simply explain something without calling names? The plain fact is, it IS a matter of QuickTime's liking. If QuickTime automatically checks the server for an available codec, WHY couldn't they actually translate a codec and post it instead of just saying "Sorry, you're SOL" time after time?

I just hope there are some MAJOR updates to QuickTime on the content and interface to match the latest Windows Media Player on Windows and the ability to handle some subscription stuff (which I don't like and won't pay for, but the fact is that's the way the world is going to keep everyone happy.)

they should make quicktime 6 like windows media player 8 for windows XP
that rocks

mac15: you have got to be joking right? are you seriously comparing the simplicity and elegance of the qt interface with that of wmp?

as to the release of qt6. i just hope the release will be for both mac os 9 and mac os x. im so upset i cant get iphoto to run on my computer. ive been waiting for qt6 for so long to have it released and have it only run in osx would just about kill me. please tell me it will be a os9 compliant. i mean im almost 100% sure it will run in os9 but im still recovering from the trauma of iphoto.

Lets not forget DVD Studio Pro 2!

Should be out 1st quater...

Because said codec was a HACK that Microsoft had been trying very hard to SQUASH. I'm calling you names because you're using an accusatory tone against quicktime when it's undeserved.

I might have some proof of QT 6 coming soon.

Here is an email I reply I recieved from Sorenson Media (pals of QT)

------------------------------------------

Yes, the shipping SBWin already supports Sorenson MPEG-4. SB Mac version 2.0 will support it as well which will be released in March of 2002 .

Thanks,
Support

Will Sorenson broadcaster be updated to stream mpeg 4 audio (ACC) when Quicktime 6 is released. Will you release an update to your products when quicktime is released?
