QuickTime Pro unable to edit mpg files

A colleague recorded a witness statement on a digital camera. He provided the file to me in mpg format. QuickTime Pro plays the file fine, but does not allow me to perform any editing on the clip. The sliding pointers used for triming, etc., never appear.

I have exported the file into formats such as AVI. QT Pro allows me to edit in AVI format, but the sound is missing. Apparently it is not recognizing the audio track.

Is there anything I can do to enhance QT Pro so it will edit the clip (like download codecs)?

If not, is there any free or cheap third-party software available that anyone can recommend for editing mpg clips?

Thanks in advance.

12" PBook 1.33 G4 10.4.2; QT Pro 7.01

Thanks guys.

I downloaded the Mpeg Steamclip referenced in the other thread, and it solved the problem. Converted the files quickly as well.
