Hello!

I have a problem with the QuickTime program. I have been using this program for several years on macOS Mojave (MacBook Air 2013). I constantly used the smooth frame-by-frame scrubbing feature by using two fingers (moving right to left) on touchpad. I do it during playback to study English (listen and rewind method).

Now I want to switch to a new MacBook, but I can't. On new versions of macOS (at least Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia) QuickTime no longer works as it did before. Now the program scrubbing only when the video is paused. For me, this is terribly inconvenient to pause the video every time. If you try to scrub while playing, it will stop the video (or rewind it, or anything, but definitely not smooth frame-by-frame scrubbing).
I assume that the QuickTime was changed due to the addition of a function "Live Text in video" in macOS Ventura.

How can I get this smooth scrubbing feature back?
Can someone contact Apple so they can see this problem?
I want this feature back. Other players like VLC or IINA cannot do such smooth scrubbing.

Thank you.

You can use J/K/L to control the playback in QuickTime and other Apple video apps. Think of them as rewind, pause, and forwards, in that order. Pressing rewind while playing will instantly start the video in reverse, pressing it multiple times will increase the rewind speed. K/space will pause it, while L will bring it back to normal playback speeds.

Apple will probably never fix your problem, they don't seem particularly interested in fixing any bugs really. There are still bugs from Catalina they've never fixed.

Why do you need frame-by-frame to study English? There is no word in a frame. I would guess at least 1 second back is necessary.
You can customize IINA in Settings – Key Bindings – Previous/next frame and Seek forward/backward n seconds.

To rewind to the exact frame I need (I don't need sound while rewinding). I often rewind one phrase back and set it before the beginning of the phrase. Usually, it's about 0.5 seconds back. If I constantly rewind 1 second back, I'll have to listen to unnecessary phrases and waste time. I repeat the same phrase several dozen times.
Using only the touchpad (without keys) is very convenient for me.

IINA is very similar to QuickTime, but it doesn't have so smooth frame-by-frame scrubbing.

I don't remember the old behavior but I know what you mean about the current behavior…takes another hand on the space bar to stop before scrolling and restart after.

I'm surprised none of the other macOS video apps available can do some of the stuff QTP can do…like that scrolling or easily showing the frame numbers.
