I'm kinda new to Mac, but I can't figure out how to work this, frankly!

I simply cannot figure out what exactly to do. I've installed VLC and wish to use it to view all of my videos. But every time I select a video type and attempt to set it to default, as soon as I go to another folder with other files of the same type, sure enough, it goes back to being Quicktime again.

I'm confused as to what to do, I want to continue to use Quicktime underneath iTunes, however, I don't want to use it to view files.

I couldn't turn up something anti-Quicktime on here, only pro-Quicktime-- Any help with doing what I want to do?

Good sir, you have saved me a great deal of agitation and unnecessary aggression towards this little silver skillet of awesome.

Thanks for your assistance! I looked for something like this but just never found it. :D
