i deleted quicktime on my macbook 10.5.8 and i go to reinstall it and it installs then i restart and its not there.
Help?
Help?
I have the same issue.
I deleted Quicktime (also the icon in my dock) because it was not playing the video's I make well. I kept a black screen but the sound would play perfect.
Anyways.. I deleted and tried reinstalling it (downloaded the .dmg from apple.com) and the whole process looks normal. Untill I restart the computer (it asks you to do this) and then I can't find the application anywhere.
Although the program Quicktime cannot be found after installing it and restarting it, video's that require Quicktime online seem to work fine.
I'ld love to have the Quicktime back on my computer badly.. Can anyone help?
Computer: Mac Pro OSX 10.5.8
Seems strange. Did you download from this page? Installing from that download should place the QuickTime Player application in your Applications folder.
Yes I did and I used pacifist to check the .pkg package and it said that lot of files where missing. Saying: Either download was finished to soon (this is not the case) or incomplete or files on your computer are missing...
All files missing start with..
/Applications/QuickTime Player.app/
I checked the package thouroughly and found the quicktimeplayer file but it has not the wellknown QT icon but an icon with a pencil, a scrapbook and tool to make circles on it.
I've tried to install older qt programs but it says I have a newer version on my computer.
I'm kinda frustrated at this point.. I've searched the whole day for my installation cd as well but so far without luck... otherwise I would have tried installing it from there.
I called apple but they don't work during weekends.. ...
And I need it this weekend so much.. but I guess it's not going to happen...
Although if anyone can help ofcourse that would be super appreciated.
M.
Perhaps the dmg you downloaded was corrupted in some way, or the install was incomplete. Simply get rid of that .dmg and download a new one. It should work correctly, and you should get the app you want in the Applications folder.
The message from Pacifist was likely just saying what you already know---that the files related to QuickTime Player.app are not present already on your hard drive.
[EDIT] If the problem persists after you try installing again, please open Console (in Utilities) and choose File->Open Quickly->Files->/private/var/log->install.log. Copy the portion related to the QuickTime install and post here.
Perhaps we can focus the search a bit:
Open Terminal (in Utilities) and enter
Code:cat /private/var/log/install.log | grep QuickTime\ Player.app
Please post the output.
How about entering this in Terminal:
Code:cat /private/var/log/install.log | grep Player.app
Unfortunately this has no results either.
Oct 3 06:29:15 username Installer[20744]: QuickTime Installation Log
So much for focusing the search.
Please open Console (in Utilities) and choose File->Open Quickly->Files->/private/var/log->install.log.
Find the start of your most recent QuickTime installation; you should see a line that looks like this:
Code:Oct 3 06:29:15 username Installer[20744]: QuickTime Installation Log
Then simply copy and post as much as you can from there on. We're trying to discover why the QuickTime Player app was not installed in /Applications while all other files were installed.
03-10-10 13:35:18 Installer[340] ./Applications/QuickTime Player.app installed to /var/run/DoNotInstall
Code:03-10-10 13:35:18 Installer[340] ./Applications/QuickTime Player.app installed to /var/run/DoNotInstall
Thus Installer is choosing not to install QuickTime Player, perhaps because it believes (incorrectly) that a version is already installed.
Move /Library/Receipts/boms/com.apple.pkg.QuickTime766_Leopard.bom to your Desktop, as well as /Library/Receipts/QuickTime766_Leopard.pkg (if you have such a file).
Then try installing once again.
I've done what you said and then installed QT without results.
Then I used Onyx to clean my mac and placed the boms file again on my desktop (the other one has not come back) and tried installing again.
Without results.
pkgutil --packages | grep QuickTime
OK. I have a couple more ideas.
In Terminal, enter
Code:pkgutil --packages | grep QuickTime
Please post the output.
Had my birthday yesterday so I respond a bit late.
The only thing it adds when I enter the code is; com.apple.pkg.QuickTime766_Leopard
sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.QuickTime766_Leopard
Happy Birthday!
In Terminal, enter
Code:sudo pkgutil --forget com.apple.pkg.QuickTime766_Leopard
(You should be asked to supply your password to complete this operation.) This command tells OS X to forget that it has ever installed QuickTime766. So after running the command, try (once again) to install QuickTime.
I'm not sure if this helped.
After I did what you said I tried opening a .mov by right clicking it. Then I choose "open with..."
I noticed there was the program logo of Quicktime but it remained faded. After choosing "open with all programs" the logo remained faded.
So I tried searching it via finder and spotlight but cannot find it anywhere. Which I find odd.
So the program appears to be there but it can't been seen anywhere except if you choose open with.. but then it remains faded and one cannot click on it.
If QuickTime Player does not appear in your Applications folder, then it was not installed. This is very strange!
Having tried all "proper" methods of handling this problem, I suggest you now try the following:
Use Pacifist to open QuickTime766Leopard.dmg. Click on "Package Contents" and then type Applications in the "Find" box at the top of the panel. You should see QuickTime Player.app in the list that appears. Click on that line to select it and then click on "Extract To..." (not "Install"). When asked to choose a folder to extract to, click on Applications and then the "Choose" button. When this process is finished, you should have a functional copy of QuickTime Player in your Applications folder.
And although i'm super thankful, the problem I had to begin with remains. I still have a black screen when playing .mov files. I guess that should be an other topic then...
thank you thank you thank you!!!
You're welcome.
About your other problem ... my only suggestion is to quit QuickTime Player and then move the QuickTime Preferences file from ~/Library/Preferences (where ~ denotes your Home folder) to your Desktop. Then restart QuickTime Player and see if it works.
