QuickTime Won't Open .avi Anymore

I installed a plugin witched allowed QuickTime to play .avi files.
I don't know what happened, but now the same file that once opened doesn't play.

I forgot the plugin name but it looked like a pocket knife.

Any ideas? I've tried reinstalling the plugin.

Check in System Preferences to see if it's up to date ?

Or just use VLC. It plays pretty much anything you can throw at it.

I use Perian and Flip4Mac plugins, in addition to VLC. Now and then I find a file VLC can't handle - specifically when it comes to surround sound.
