No, it's not firmware controlled, it's the driver. If it was the firmware, XP would also be limited but it's not.
i actually believe that that is controlled to use 64MB per 512MB of system RAM. that is why having 1GB of system RAM lets you run Vista with aero affects and all (which requires 128 MB VRAM).

I don't know why Apple fixes the memory at 64 MiB shared - perhaps OSX is unable to deal with the dynamic allocation of memory to the GMA, so OSX fixes it at 64 MiB without dynamic allocation.

OS X uses as much VRAM as is available. It doesnt use less than 64 MB, so Apple limited it 64 so OSX wont hold 224. Remeber, Apple ships their computers with 512 MB RAM so -224 would kill the performance!

... and this is for education!!! 899$ is 705€ not 960€!!!

28% more - Cheap Apples for inner city kids my a**e!

Lived in Europe long? Everything cost more there. And I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of built-in taxes. U.S. prices are before tax.

I know for sure the taxes (still, higher than US) are part of the sticker price in England. Here the cost is really $973 U.S. dollars. I'm in L.A. It's more in Manhattan, NY.

Just have a small question about the Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics.
Why is Apple selling it as 64MB shared memory, when dell is selling the same model as 224MB shared memory

There may be some point in the MacBook to reduce the heat, but this can't be the reason in the iMac... can it

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Win XP utilized 200 some-odd MB, whereas Mac OS X uses up to 80MB for the same GMA950 chip.

And if you install Win XP on your Macbook you will get the gain too.

since the isight is still there i believe the iR receiver is still there, and as such i would think that these imacs would use the same software discs as any imac-- which means frontrow would be installed, you could buy a remote from apple to use with it. but like 99% of the other posts, this is just an educated guess.

jobs'

quote from Jobs in the 2002 macworld expo in san francisco "The new iMac ushers in the age of flat-screen computing for everyone. The CRT display is now officially dead..." true after 4 years

Looks like it has been pulled for purchase by individuals...
I don't see what you mean. It's never been available for individuals. That's why they call it an education only model;)
